It was established as the Bank of New South Wales in 1817. In became Westpac Banking Corporation in 1982 when it merged with the Commercial Bank of Australia. It became a public company in 2002. In 2008, it merged with St. George Bank.

Today, Westpac has a wide network of branches in Australia and the rest of the Pacific region. It employs some 36,000 people. Its global assets are worth AU$677.5 billion. It has a market capitalisation of AU$95.5 billion. It is among the top 5 listed companies by market capitalisation on the ASX.

The Corporation serves some 12 million customers under its three major divisions. Australian Financial Services (AFS) provides retail and business banking solutions. Westpac Retail and Business Banking works with small and medium enterprises and commercial and agricultural business clients. BT Financial Group Australia is a provider of wealth and insurance solutions.
